This volume opens up new research perspectives on the interplay between the formation of religious traditions and the criticism addressed to them in different contexts. The scholarly investigation of how religious traditions have been criticized, reconsidered, and modified helps to better understand the dialectics of continuity and rupture that pervade religious communities. The exploration of the interactive processes of emergence, criticism, and reconsideration of religious traditions not only provides insight into how religions have developed in the past but also illuminates the present rise of new forms of religiosity within the framework of postmodernity. Belonging to different scholarly disciplines such as Religious Studies, Jewish Studies, Christian Theology, Islamic Studies, History, Philosophy, and Sociology, and resorting to a broad spectrum of methodological tools, the authors of this volume delve deep into the realms of religious reality and shed new light on the dynamics of religious transformation, past and present.

"In Parables in Changing Contexts, new venues in the comparative study of parables are addressed by scholars of Judaism, New Testament, Buddhism and Islam. Essays cover parables in the synoptic Gospels, Rabbinic midrash, and parabolic tales and fables in the Babylonian Talmud. Three essays address parables in Islam and Buddhism. The volume shows how parables are suitably adapted in terms of form and rhetoric to enhance religious identity formation. Parables serve as media, as sensational forms making the sacred present, albeit encoded or riddled, in all cases invoking the listener's active interpretative participation and cultural imagination. Adapting a multidisciplinary approach to these gems of storytelling, parables in a particular way provide new insights in the cultures that produced them".

This collection of essays analyzes ‛tradition’ as a category in the historical and comparative study of religion. The book questions the common assumption that tradition is simply the “passing down” or imitation of prior practices and discourses. It begins from the premise that many traditions are, at least in part, social fabrications, often deliberately serving particular ideological ends. Individual chapters examine a wide variety of historical periods and religions (Congolese, Buddhist, Christian, Confucian, Cree, Esoteric, Hawaiian, Hindu, Islamic, Jewish, New Religious Movement, and Shinto). Different sections of the book consider tradition's relation to three sets of issues: legitimation and authority; agency and identity; modernity and the West.

Does the Bible mark the end of revelation? Are any further changes mere debased tradition? Or could there be a continuing medium of revelation in later imaginative alterations to the biblical stories? David Brown seeks to answer such questions.

Since its origins, the Catholic Church has accepted both scripture and tradition as authorities for church teaching on God, Christ and salvation and has held that scripture is susceptible to interpretation.
